Pre-arm sonic zeros: (done 2/13/91)

Note that these were done after thresholds changed somewhat, but
without changing the triggering point.

SUW1: A: -138 +/-3 B: +11 +/-4 C: +28 +/- 3

SUW2: A: +196 +/- 4 B: -164 +/-9 C: +170 +/- 9
(Note: transducers switched: path B top&bottom)
(Note: noise level is higher than SUW1 - possibly because of
the extension to the transducer cables)

SAT3: U: +21 +/-.5 V: -86 +/-2 W: +79 +/-1
(Note: the HC11 coefficients haven't been changed yet)

Cables switched on ATI

I had hooked up the sonic transducer cables wrong, which was causing v and w
to be negative (and probably also responsible for the large biases I had seen).
I switched VR1&VR2 and WR1&WR2. This should improve matters greatly!

Note that zeros on this sonic must now be checked again.

All sonics look clean during this shift so far (since 0045 MST)

Also note that I have changed the scale in preprocess.config to let c go down
to 320 m/s, since it is about 329 tonight.

31: SONICS , Site none, Mon 18-Feb-1991 09:28:20 MST, ATI sonic has started spiking moderatel
ATI sonic has started spiking moderately

UW.4m also has a few, now that the winds have picked up to about 8 m/s.
UW.10m looks perfect (knock on wood!).

35: SONICS , Site none, Mon 18-Feb-1991 15:59:10 MST, SONIC SPIKES:
SONIC SPIKES:

There has been some spiking on the 4m uw sonic
thru out the day. The 4m ati also has spikes, mostly on
the u component.

43: SONICS , Site none, Tue 19-Feb-1991 15:03:58 MST, GILL SONIC:
GILL SONIC:

The Gill sonic was hooked up today.
Only minor problems had to be dealt with.
Proper calibrations have been entered into preprocess.config.
Looking at cockpit, output signals agree with the ati sonic.

50: SONICS , Site none, Wed 20-Feb-1991 12:08:39 MST, ATI COMPARISON SONIC:
ATI COMPARISON SONIC:

The ATI comparison sonic was added to the system
today. Instead of speed of sound the last parameter is
temperature. Eventhing looks good.

SONIC SPIKES:

There were a few spikes on the uw sonics last
night.
The intercomparison sonics look good.

Sonics status from xcockpit:

I cleared these plots yesterday (about 16 hours ago)
UW4 - 3 spikes
UW10 - 1 spike
ATI.NCAR - 16+ spikes
ATI.ATI - clean, but no V! (but it was good sometime - it has gone bad during the last 12 hours)
GILL - clean

87: SONICS , Site none, Sun 24-Feb-1991 07:02:30 MST, UW.4m has biases
UW.4m has biases

I think I must never have switched the receive cards for AT and AB back when I was
working on it on Wed. I just went out to the masts and switched them back - this means
that the biases will be different for the first 2 hours of this IOP. (Better than
nothing?)

90: SONICS , Site none, Sun 24-Feb-1991 10:11:25 MST, All sonics are having problems now
All sonics are having problems now

The Gill looks the best, followed by the UW.4m
Lots of spikes on UW.10m, a few on our ATI, and the ati ati
would look okay except that its sonic-temperature is terrible
(also V is still out on the ati ati). Winds are now gusting
to 15 m/s, and T is about -1C. Snow flurries in the air.

103: SONICS , Site none, Mon 25-Feb-1991 11:21:46 MST, ATI - v component:
ATI - v component:

v component on the ATI sonic looks ok, using
xstrip. Winds right now are quite light.

106: SONICS , Site none, Mon 25-Feb-1991 14:49:54 MST, SONIC SPIKING:
SONIC SPIKING:

There is excessive spiking on the 4m and 10m
uw sonics, on both the u and v components. There is
also spiking on the ncar ati unit. The Gill and the ATI
sonic look good.

111: SONICS , Site none, Tue 26-Feb-1991 10:40:01 MST, SENSOR STATUS:
SENSOR STATUS:

Sensors look good. There was spiking throughout
the night on the 4m and 10m uw sonics. Spikes occurred on
both the u and v components.
The v component on the ATI unit was off scale at times
during the night, while the other two comparison units were not.

134: SONICS , Site none, Thu 28-Feb-1991 03:47:06 MST, SONIC SIGNALS:
SONIC SIGNALS:

Since restarting cockpit, 08:00 GMT, the sonics
are looking good except for the w component on the ati comparison.
There was more deviation on its signal compared to the others.

136: SONICS , Site none, Thu 28-Feb-1991 04:50:37 MST, v.ati.ati has just gone bad
v.ati.ati has just gone bad

The temperature has just dropped from 0 to -2 C. Just in the last 2 xcockpit scans,
v has developed -5 and -10 m/s spikes - looks like its headed offscale.
Temperature looks a bit spikey also, but not terrible (on the large scale).
As of the 3rd scan, v is offscale except for a few spikes.

All other sonics look good.

137: SONICS , Site none, Thu 28-Feb-1991 05:06:07 MST, w.ati.ati and t now bad also
w.ati.ati and t now bad also

They are very noisy w.r.t. the other sonics. w varies 1 m/s peak-to-peak, while
our ati is 0.4 m/s and t varies 7 C pp vs. 1 C.

U still looks okay!

ati.ati sonic back alive on all channels

T = -1 C now - I've made a bunch of plots documenting the failure.  It definately
tracks with temperature, v going out at -4C.

All other sonics haven't spiked at all this shift.

156: SONICS , Site none, Fri 01-Mar-1991 11:43:16 MST, ATI SONIC WORK:
ATI SONIC WORK:

Gary Zimmerman is working on the ATI sonic at
this moment. He replaced both the v and w transducer pairs.

follow up: Gary finished working on the sonic. He could not find
any obvious reason for the failure. This was expected since it
appeared to be a temperature problem. He adjusted the pots to
accommodate the new transducers. Work was completed at around
19:00 GMT.

159: SONICS , Site none, Fri 01-Mar-1991 13:38:38 MST, SONIC CONDITIONS:
SONIC CONDITIONS:

Some spiking has been going on on the 10m
uw sonic. This has been on the v component.
Since Gary worked on the ati sonic everything up to now
has looked good.

SONIC SPIKING:

There were a few spikes, throughout the night,
on the 4m and 10m uw sonics, v component.
The ncar ati had a number of spikes on all 3 components.
The ati sonic looks good, so does the gill.

SONIC SPIKES:

There has been a lot of spiking on the ncar ati
sonic today. Mostly on the w component and little on the u.
The ati soinc looks ok with a few soikes on the w.

SONIC SPIKES:

The u component of the ncar.ati.comp
sonic has been spiking throughout the day.
The uw sonics have had a few spikes showing on
the speed of sound computation.

197: SONICS , Site none, Tue 05-Mar-1991 22:25:40 MST, NEW SCRIPTS FOR SONIC COMPARISON
NEW SCRIPTS FOR SONIC COMPARISON

Wrote two new scripts for plotting the
4m sonic means and covariances for 24 hrs,
sonics_mean and sonics_cov. They are
used as
sonics_mean
and
sonics_cov

NCAR ati sonic
the u comp of the ncar ati sonic stopped spiking sometime between 9:30
and 10:00.

227: SONICS , Site none, Sat 09-Mar-1991 06:56:26 MST, ati sonic problem
ati channel v shows strange behavior, possibly
related to the cold temperatures. Seems
to have a low frequency drift.

242: SONICS , Site none, Mon 11-Mar-1991 15:21:04 MST, Sonic status:
Sonic status:

10m uw sonic had a few spikes evident on the
speed of sound output. NCAR ati on the u component
(and speed of sound).
